Quebec Sales Tax

DCHP-2 (Apr 2016)
n. Quebec, Finance, Administration

roughly the equivalent to the federal GST in other provinces.

Type: 1. Origin The Quebec Sales Tax was introduced in Quebec in 1991 at the same time that the GST was introduced in all other provinces. Quebec has signed an agreement with the federal government allowing the province to fully administer the sales tax. Thus the equivalent of the GST in Quebec was named QST (see entry) to denote the different systems (see Maple Leaf Web reference).
In 2013, changes were made to harmonize the QST with the GST, not into the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax), but into an "amended QST" of the same or similar proportion of the HST.

Quotations

1991
The introduction of the goods-and-services tax and the new 8-percent Quebec sales tax has created mass confusion for both business and consumers.
1995
Changes to the way Quebec sales tax is administered are putting the Quebec Revenue Department in a position it's unaccustomed to: earning kudos from small business. The changes will save small businesses some money, but [Pierre] Cleroux said one of the key benefits is less paperwork, as small businesses are allowed to use the same tax-reporting periods for the Quebec sales tax as they use for GST.
2000
Federal and provincial sales taxes account for 13 per cent of the price per litre of gas; federal excise taxes account for 12.8 per cent; Quebec's fuel tax - the highest in the country, accounts for 21 per cent. Of all these extra levies, the goods-and-services tax and the Quebec sales tax are added last, becoming in effect taxes on taxes.
2005
If he wants to walk the talk of a dreamer, a good first step would be eastward toward Quebec City, where he should try to make Premier Jean Charest deliver on his 2003 election promise to give municipalities a share of the Quebec sales tax. Then maybe we talk dreams.
2010
The provincial government had already announced the Quebec Sales Tax would jump by one percentage point on Jan. 1, 2011. Finance Minister Raymond Bachand said yesterday it will increase by another percentage point on Jan. 1, 2012, to reach 9.5 per cent. The QST is currently 7.5 per cent. In total, the two hikes will generate an extra $3 billion in annual revenue.
2016
Quebec already has the highest sales tax in Canada after Nova Scotia. The Quebec Sales Tax and federal GST total a combined 14.975 per cent.
